Not Today

“S o have you talked to her?” Ellen said through the phone the minute that Eli answered. She had heard that Destiny was in North Brooke Port since she ran out of the venue, and she had hoped that her son had connected with her.

“Ma, don’t start.”

“I’m gonna take that as a yes. We’re coming down soon, I can’t wait to lay eyes on her little pretty chocolate self.” Ellen beamed. She really loved Destiny and was excited about the opportunity to have her back in their lives full time.

“Leave that boy alone Ellen and get ya behind back in here before I hit play.”

“You better not start that show without me, old man.”

“I got your old man, woman.”

Eli moved the receiver from his lips so that he could laugh in peace. He always thought it was cute when his parents argued because he knew it came from a place of love. He had the perfect model for long-lasting love, and he hated he didn’t follow it when he had the chance. It was also the reason that he was fighting so hard for it now.

“What you over there laughing about?” Grover fussed at his son. “Don’t think I didn’t hear you. You just wait til you married for as long as we have been, and you get to taste this mess. Won’t be shit funny, son.”

“Oh, you hush.” Eli could hear moving around on the other end of the phone. “You should be on my side. I’m trying to get us some pretty chocolate grandbabies.”

“Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!” Eli sat straight up in his seat and shook his head like they could see him. “We are nowhere near the baby talk. You need to pump your brakes. I got time for that. Right now, I’m focused on building my business and…” his words trailed off and his mother or father didn’t give him a chance to fix it.

“Trying to get your woman back.” They both said in unison.

Eli chuckled and shook his head again. “I don’t know what to do with y’all two.”

“It ain’t nothing you can do.” Ellen said before her and Grover argued again like Eli wasn’t on the phone.

He let them do what they did best. There was no need to interject, that would only put him on the hot seat, and he wasn’t trying to do that. So instead, he scrolled through his calendar for a second.

“You have got to be shitting me.” Eli said before he could catch himself.

“Boy, who are you talking to like that?”

“Not you Ma but let me call you back. I got to handle something.”

“Okay, see you soon, son.” Ellen said before she started talking to Grover in the background.

Eli hung up the phone and immediately clicked on his scheduling app. This was the main reason he was thinking of hiring a receptionist. He didn’t think he needed one because right now he was the only trainer and he scheduled everything through his online scheduling system. Only issue with that is issues like the one he was facing slipped through without his knowledge.
