Chapter 7

Nadia

You Forgot to Put Your Panties Back On

The next morning, Judy woke up early to run some errands, and Ayshan decided to go with her. She said she needed female toiletries, but I knew she just wanted to give Saw and me the most alone time she could since her time in America with me was winding down.

With the villa so quiet this morning, I decided to make Saw and me breakfast in the guest house, so we could talk.

“You never eat much,” I said as I stuffed some French toast into my mouth.

“I eat until I’m satisfied. Is that okay with you?” He drank some orange juice and smiled at me.

Looking into his eyes again from across a table had me thinking about how this handsome man was a killer. I had killed before, but I was no killer. Everything he told me at The Four Seasons still played in my mind. He held so much rage that lay dormant, and at any moment, it could be unleashed. That frightened me about him. It also made me love him—he could kill me anytime he wanted and never wanted to.

“I know I don’t cook as well as Judy does.”

“Your food is fine, my Nadia.”

While he was in a good mood, I went in for the kill. “I was thinking about flying the kids in. They should really meet their sister. I’m not satisfied with you or Ayshan’s response to my other children. They matter, too, Saw.”

“Who are you trying to convince?”

“Excuse me?”

“I know your other children matter, and so does Ayshan.” He ate a piece of turkey bacon. “So, who are you trying to convince?”

“I just think they have the right to know about her.”

“You’re right. I just agree with Ayshan. Why introduce them when Ayshan has made it clear that it wouldn’t be safe? You’ll only hurt them.”

“How?”

“They’re going to want to talk to her and see her a lot. They will tell their friends and teachers about her. Do not forget who Ayshan’s father is. If the government puts the pieces together, which they are extremely good at, they will find out that you have a daughter, and I am the father.”

“I don’t understand your point.”

“After you had her, she wasn’t registered at any hospital in Haiti.”

“But this is America.”

“The CIA operates on foreign soil and American soil. To get to me, you don’t think they will get to Ayshan?”

“How will they get to Ayshan?” He didn’t answer. Instead, he tried to hide his frustration and let me answer my own silly question. I nodded and dropped my fork. “Through me. Right.”

“Exactly.”

“It’s just not fair, Saw. You’ve had plenty of time with her. A week just isn’t enough.”

“Bringing her here was a mistake.”

“How could you say that to me?”

“It was.”

“I wouldn’t put my daughter in danger. I wouldn’t put any of my children in danger.”

“Maybe when they get older, but not now. Children are innocent. They don’t know when they’re wrong. They may get overly excited about her and tell everyone about her like, I said.
