Chapter 16
Never trust a demon. He has a hundred motives for anything he does ... Ninety-nine of them, at least, are malevolent.

Monday afternoon
I walked slowly home. Obviously no point in heading to my office. I was sure my office computer had been taken by the investigators. I had a class to teach tomorrow and right now I couldnât even remember the topic. I had notes at home and could prep there.
My cell rang. I assumed it was Alice calling, but the display said it was Carol. When I answered, she was hysterically saying my name.
âKristin??? Kristin???â
My heart nearly stopped. The boys. Something was the matter with the boys.
âCarol, what is it?â I choked out.
âICE is trying to find Giles. I knew something like this would happen. I warned him. I warned him.â
It was awful, but I still breathed a sigh of relief. Not my boys.
âOkay, slow down. Tell me whatâs happening,â I said firmly.
âMrs. Levinson, you know, our neighbor, she stopped me at the beginning of the block. I think sheâd been waiting for me. She said she thinks there are two ICE agents parked across from the house. They have knocked on the front door several times, and when they get no answer they go back to their car.â
Well, Mrs. Levinson should know ICE agents when she sees them, I thought. Regina Levinson was our next-door neighbor and a retired attorney who volunteered with the Chicago Immigrants Rights Project, a not-for-profit that provided legal services on immigration issues.
âSo where are you and the boys now?â I asked as calmly as I could.
âWeâre in Mrs. Levinsonâs kitchen. She gave the boys kugel and fixed me some tea. Iâm in the front room so the boys canât hear me. Oh, Kristin, I knew it. I knew it.â And sweet, calm Carol sobbed.
âWhere is Giles now?â I asked as I started to jog toward our house.
âIn class, I think. Iâve tried calling him. He doesnât answer. Oh, oh, suppose he just walks home, and they get him?â
âNow Carol, think for a moment. Giles has legal immigration status. I know that and so do you. Does he carry his papers with him?â I puffed that out as I sped up from a jog to a run.
âYes. Yes. He has started to since, you know, since Trump was elected.â She hiccupped, but the sobbing seemed to have stopped.
âCarol, Carol, listen to me. Put Mrs. Levinson on the phone, would you?â
âOkay,â she said, and I could hear her steps as she left the room.
âKristin?â Reginaâs no-nonsense voice asked.
âYes. Regina, whatâs the best thing to do right now?â I got that out even though now I was running flat out.
