JULY 15

I have moved into the studio. I told him I have some projects to do and that I need a lot of time and space to get them done. I guess I was hoping he would say something more than okay, but he didn't.

The only one who's upset is Jeremy. He wants to move to the studio with me. The anguish on his face tells me what I don't want to admit. Eric and I are separating and the children have already chosen sides.

I don't want to read any more right now. It's weird reading what Mom was thinking and feeling. I wish Jenna was here. She would probably understand a lot more and could explain it to me. But I understood one thing. I didn't know Dad had been Mom's therapist. He and Mom always told us they met at an art show on campus.

I remember the day Mom moved into the studio. It was a Saturday morning. I was sitting on the deck. It was hot and I was thinking about riding my bike over to the pool at the high school when I saw her come out the back door and go toward the studio, carrying a box. I ran to hold the studio door open for her.

"What're you doing?" I asked.

"I've got a lot of work to do so I'm going to be living in the studio for a while."

"How long?" I asked. My voice started trembling and I was afraid I was going to cry because I didn't want to be in the house with just Dad and Jenna.

She told me not to worry. "I'll be right here whenever you need me."

And I said, "But I want you around even when I don't need you."

I thought I saw her eyes tear up, but I'm not sure. Then I asked if she and Dad were going to get a divorce. She smiled and said, "Of course not, sweetheart."

I knew she was trying to make me feel better, but she didn't

I look out the window. It is starting to snow.
