I’m a diversity and inclusion leader at a law firm. I work with businesses to help them become more inclusive and embrace diversity. I work on strategy and policy and report on matters such as the gender pay gap. I activate training and get people talking about sensitive topics and awareness raising. It also extends to adding stuff like gender identity boxes on data forms and having gender-neutral bathrooms.

I work for the National Police Air Service, and with my team, we provide helicopter support to police forces across the UK, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year. That might mean searching for missing or at-risk people or for suspects of crime using our high-powered camera or thermal imaging system. It might mean searching for and pursuing a wanted vehicle in cities or rural areas. It might mean landing in fields to pick up and move negotiators or dog units quickly to where they’re needed. Or it could mean many other tasks—you never know what the day will bring. Operating the cameras, mission systems, six radios, and aircraft systems effectively and safely means working and training as a team that, per shift, consists of myself as the aircraft captain plus two police officers—a camera operator and a mission commander. My role is to ensure the aircraft is checked over each day and working as it should and that we’re briefed and ready to go at any moment. Then to navigate through sometimes complex and busy UK airspace to where we’re needed, including at night and in poor weather, and position the aircraft to make best use of the camera system. The police officers assist in navigating and aircraft safety, and once on scene, they mission-manage the task with units on the ground. We each have our roles and responsibilities but very much help each other out, knowing that our success is measured as a team.
