Cole
I havenât seen Callie since we sat by the pool last week.
Yet the saying out of sight, out of mind hasnât proven to be true.
I half-expected her to return to Paul, to crawl back into the comfort of her familiar patterns, but she hasnât.
Josie filled me in on what happened when Callie packed some of her belongings from her home. All the things she said to Paul, how she didnât give in and let him weasel his way back into her life with empty promises and flat-out lies.
Courageous Callie.
My heart soars with pride. Iâm not even going to attempt to analyze why.
So, when a flash of blond goes past the large window at Gertieâs, my head snaps around, and my heart skips a beat. My feet carry me outside before my brain even realizes what Iâm doing.
âCallie!â
She spins around, and a smile blooms on her face when she spots me. âHey, Cole. What are you doing here?â
I nod my head in the direction of the diner. âGrabbing lunch. What about you? This is far from home.â
She points toward a building behind me. âJust came from a job interview.â
My eyebrows shoot up. âReally? How did it go?â
She shrugs. âEveryone keeps telling me I donât have experience for the jobs Iâm applying for. Donât know how to gain experience if nobody hires me.â
âAh. Thatâs the worst part of job hunting. Iâm sorry.â
She waves her hand. âItâs fine.â
I know her eyes underneath those sunglasses would tell me otherwise.
âAre you busy now?â I ask. âFeel like joining me for lunch?â
She adjusts the strap of her purse on her shoulder. âYou wouldnât mind?â
âNot at all. Come on.â
Billyâs brown eyes almost pop out of his head when Callie takes the red stool beside me.
âCallie, this is Billy. We work together at the construction site.â
She leans over and clasps her hand in his outstretched one. âItâs nice to meet you, Billy.â
âLikewise.â
His eyes rove over her as she shakes off her blazer, revealing a silky royal-blue tank. Canât blame him for staring, because her creamy skin captures my attention as well. Itâs the most skin Iâve seen her expose.
I suppose this is how she normally dresses when she doesnât have any bruises to hide.
âWhatâs good here?â She pushes her sunglasses up onto her head while she flips through the menu.
âEverything, sugar.â Gertie smiles wide as she presses her hands onto the counter. âThen again, Iâm biased. I own the joint.â
âThen Iâll let you surprise me.â Callie flips her menu closed. âIâm not picky.â
Gertie looks between the two of us before her gaze settles back on Callie. âIâm Gertrude, though everyone here calls me Gertie.â
âItâs a pleasure to meet you, Gertie. Iâm Callie. Iâm a friend of Coleâs.â
âFriend?â Billy blurts out. âColeâs got friends?â
I flip him off.
Callie laughs. âIâm the only one, I think.â
âCanât imagine why.â Billy claps me on the back. âHeâs so charming and friendly. Always has a smile on his face.â
âAll right, all right.â I point at Callie. âYouâre not invited to lunch anymore.â
She grins and nudges me with her shoulder.
