By the time Toby made it back to Naomi’s house, all the lights were out. He imagined what was going on inside, Naomi curled up in bed, the sheets touching her soft skin. She might have her headphones on, listening to music, or even have her eyes closed, listening to one of the stupid meditation apps that she had loaded on her phone.

Toby knew the truth. She didn’t need any of that. All she needed was to focus on him.

For a moment, Toby thought about driving away. He needed to talk to her. No, he needed to convince her that she was behaving badly. Ignoring him would be something she would regret for the rest of her life.

Feeling a pit of anger in his gut, Toby got out of the car, slamming the door closed. Convincing her wasn’t going to work. He needed to tell her. He needed to do what he hadn’t done at work — demand to be heard, demand to have someone take notice of him.

Taking control was the only answer.

Toby circled Naomi’s house. He’d spent enough time there that he knew the weaknesses of the structure. In fact, he’d discussed them with her on many occasions. She had dreams about what she wanted to do to the house, improvements that she could make. It was one of the things that Toby loved about her more than anything else. The pairing of their talents was powerful. He had the design background, the creative genius to make a vision come to life. Naomi had the practical skill of being able to execute it.

Now he would use that to his advantage. Striding around the side of the house, Toby went to the back door that led into the garage. If he’d told Naomi once, he told her a million times to have the flimsy door replaced, but she hadn’t. It was a contractor-grade wooden door with nothing more to secure it than a lock built into the handset. There was no deadbolt and no way to prevent intruders from making their way into the house.

Toby looked at the door, knowing it wouldn’t take much to force it open. He lowered his chin and then wrapped his arm around the front of his body, ramming his shoulder into it, feeling the door pop open under the force of his body. He almost laughed. It didn’t even take that much effort. Toby stepped inside, the dark of the garage surrounding him. He could smell the cooling engine of Naomi’s SUV, plus the scent of gas and oil leaking from an old mower she had in the corner that she kept promising to have serviced before the grass started to grow again but hadn’t.

He’d told her to take care of it. The fact that she hadn’t was a disappointment.

In the darkness, Toby made his way across the garage, stepping carefully around Naomi’s SUV and then up to the back door. Naomi never locked it. It was yet another thing he had tried to help her with that she hadn’t done.
