The terms heart and soul here are presumably synonyms, as in the New Testament “heart, soul, strength and mind” are synonyms for the purpose of inclusiveness. Here soul (Hebrew nephesh) does not mean what it means in Genesis 2:7, where God formed man of the dust of the ground, breathed into him the breath or spirit of life, and man became a living soul. In Genesis and generally in the Old Testament soul is a composite or compound of clay and spirit, incarnate man. This is not true in I Samuel 2:35, for God is not a compound of earth and spirit. “What is in my heart and in my soul” refers to God’s plans for the future. They cannot be emotions because the immutable God is impassible and no more has emotional ups and downs than he has arms and eyes.

Samuel 7:3 Go, do all that is in your mind [King James: thine heart], for the Lord is with thee.
