Chapter 30

She was home now, the home she had lived in for only one year in Mirrington Heights. But home was different now with her parents gone. The specter of unhappy memories permeated in each and every room like faint, white dust hovering around the long neglected furniture covered in linen. It felt nauseating in light of the abrupt way she had moved out of the house eight years ago. Margaux took a deep breath as she placed her fuschia mobile luggage in the foyer, gripped her shoulder bag, and headed towards the stairs.

Opening the door to her bedroom, she noticed nothing had changed since her departure eight years ago. Her bed was perfectly made and her books were in their proper places on the shelves. There was no dust or grime, only dead silence, as if the room was intentionally preserved to last forever like a shrine to her memory.

Margaux shivered. It had been so long ago, the last time she slept in this room.

Throwing her shoulder bag on the queen-sized bed, Margaux walked towards the adjoining bathroom suite. She opened the double French doors and looked in. Again, nothing changed in this room either. The toiletries she had left behind still standing in their proper places on the vanity countertop.

Margaux removed her clothes and threw them on the floor. It would be good to take a long, hot bath. The plane trip had been quite remarkable, and yet, unexpected and unnerving. She had spent hours conversing with the military officer and yet, in the end, he had acted like he had never seen her before. It didn’t help that she saw those awful dark eyes on him triggering a memory that made no sense to her still.

And now he was gone and she did not know where he lived. She did not know how to reach him. There seemed no point in even contacting him if he did not remember her or their conversations on the plane.

“Oh, God” Margaux stared at the bathroom mirror towards a reflection of her naked, curvaceous body. Blah, it was disgusting. “How did I end up looking like that the past eight years? I’m all flabbiness. God.”

A lilting, melodious voice came out from nowhere, sternly reproving her. “Do not deceive yourself, Margaux. There is nothing wrong with your physical form. Please stop it.”

At that moment, the mirror shimmered, a small dot expanding into sparkles of white and gold lights obscuring Margaux’s reflection. The sparkling lights exploded and finally settled into a living form.

Margaux gasped. “Anastasia?”

“Greetings, Margaux. I am delighted you remember me.”

“Oh, Anastasia,” Margaux exclaimed with joy. “I am so happy to see you. I have missed you the past eight years. Where were you?”

“I was always with you, Margaux. But there was a time where I had to be summoned to complete my destiny, before returning to my dimensional vicinity with a new mission.”

“That’s not fair, Anastasia. You are talking riddles. I only felt that you had left me rather abruptly. You really hurt me back then.
