Amazing Jumps of 1968

Everyone knows how to jump, but not everyone gets to do it at the Olympics! Bob Beamon did. Because their measuring device wasn’t long enough, officials had trouble measuring his long jump. Finally, the result was announced: 29 feet, 2½ inches, almost two feet longer than the world record. Beamon, from New York City, never jumped that far again, and held the record until 1991.

Before this Olympics, high-jump athletes jumped upright, in a standing position. But Dick Fosbury, from Seattle, twisted his body, going over headfirst with his back to the bar. He took gold with 7 feet, 41/4 inches, and changed the sport forever. Now every high-jumper does the “Fosbury Flop.”
