For the next hour, he did as she suggested. He smiled and said, ‘thank you’ and ‘you’re welcome’ and ‘come again’ repeatedly. He shook hands and kissed cheeks and laughed heartily. He made sure the grills were off and ushered in the small cleaning crew. He sent Dominique—who avoided clean-ups like the plague—off with a brush against her soft cheek. He knew she didn’t really want to leave while Jenelle was there, but several hours outside was well past her limit.

The whole time, Lucas’s mind was whirling. Why had he sent away the woman he was supposed to make a future with while simultaneously hoping the woman from his past didn’t leave? He couldn’t believe that David was sitting in his kitchen, couldn’t believe Egypt was taking his side, couldn’t believe the bastard wouldn’t leave. Finally, he stood with Kenya, Ikenna, Miles, and Jenelle on the patio. In soft tones, he told a stunned Kenya what had unfolded in the kitchen. Miles and Jenelle watched him. Jenelle, especially, seemed to have become a permanent fixture at his side. Lucas was grateful for her support and strength.

“You need me, man?” Miles asked.

Lucas shook his head and Miles turned to walk out the back gate.

“Miles,” Lucas’s voice was a little more than a gruff whisper, but still his best friend heard him. “Zaire might.”

It was a big concession and Miles eyed his partner.

“No accounting for her taste,” Lucas joked, his voice tired.

Miles nodded and the five of them traipsed into the house. By some unspoken agreement, they met in the dining room with its huge formal table. One look at Zaire’s red-rimmed eyes had Miles pulling out the chair beside him. She sat gingerly and scooted closer to him, closing her eyes and resting her head on his shoulder.

“Hello, Kenya,” David spoke first.

“Daddy,” her voice was guarded, somewhere between her older siblings’ outright hostility and her baby sister’s enthusiastic welcome.

Jade stood. “You know, nine’s probably a crowd—”

“No,” Zaire vetoed softly. “Everyone here is family. You all know how he dumped us. You can all hear the explanation.”

Egypt frowned as Lucas nodded his agreement. Jade eased back into her chair.

“You got what you wanted. Talk,” Lucas ordered his father.

David met his eyes squarely. “I have to begin by apologizing—”

Lucas snorted and Zaire rolled her eyes. Kenya simply rubbed her temples.

“Give him a chance,” Egypt pleaded, holding tightly to her father’s hand.

“Whatever you might think, I am sorry. And I love all of you with every breath in my body. But I also wronged all of you. I have no excuses. I just… I couldn’t live without Angelica—” David said.

Zaire interrupted him. “How dare you say her name after what you did to us! Mommy counted on you and—”

“I dare because she was my wife, Zaire, and I loved her. I love her. I was crazy for a little while. Literally. I left home going to work and I ended up halfway across the country. I didn’t know how I got there.”

“You bought a plane ticket to New York on your credit card.
