Within days of arriving in London, Ellis was convinced Uncle George had been the most brilliant man to ever walk the face of the earth. Mac was everything heâd needed and more. He was no longer the shining, erotic figure of Ellisâs adolescent fantasies, he was a very real and very sensual man.
âWe need to get up and prepare for the Duke of Burvilleâs ball,â he prompted Mac, poking the manâs naked chest teasingly.
The two of them had spent the afternoon in bed, since secluding themselves from the company of Aunt Martha and Arabella was so much more preferable than listening to the pairâs constant litany of complaints. For several reasons.
âI know it is fashionable to be late,â he went on, lifting himself on one arm so that he could smile down at Mac, âbut I never understood that. Is it not more polite to arrive at the time on oneâs invitation?â
Mac smiled back at him with that lazyâand somewhat tightâsmile that heâd frequently worn since theyâd arrived in London. âFor a man who has come into his own in some ways,â he began, sliding a hand up Ellisâs thigh to cradle his arse, âyou cling to your priggish ways quite a bit.â
âThey arenât priggish,â Ellis said, dipping down to steal a kiss from Macâs lips. âTheyâre responsible.â
He stole one more kiss, then rolled out of bed and began the necessary task of cleaning up the evidence of how he and Mac had spent their afternoon.
Just a fortnight before, Ellis never would have imagined himself as the kind of man who would not only have a sensual, older loverâthough to be honest, Mac didnât seem that much older than him, now that Ellis was not a pimply adolescent stealing his first glimpse of a naked and aroused male bodyâwhom he kept in his own house and his own bed, he would never have imagined he would feel as comfortable in that bed or that house as he did.
Something about having Mac by his side, particularly since theyâd arrived in London, had inspired Ellis with confidence in himself. It was not just their escapades in bed either. Mac was engaging and attentive. Their conversation kept Ellis on his toes and invigorated him. And Mac was a constant, steady presence by his side as heâd faced his aunt and half-sisterâs daily complaints. Whereas before he had let their criticisms and comparisons to Hugh pile onto his shoulders like a bricklayerâs load, now he could merely smile and nod and feign interest in who was being invited to which balls and whether the modiste had delayed the creation of gowns for the two women on purpose or simply because she had a great deal of custom.
Their bark no longer had bite, because he knew in his heart that he was now a man of strength and experience, and that someone was taking care of him.
Perhaps, just maybe, someone even loved him.
âYou have a bit of soap left just here,â Mac said, wandering to
