COLOUR MIXING USING A RESIST
There are some extra implications for colours and colour blending to think about when using resists. With simple flat felting, you often arenât worried about what colour the reverse of the felt ends up, for example if youâre creating a picture, as the reverse will never be seen. But in resist felting youâre deliberately creating a 3D hollow form where the usual reverse of the felt will often be seen, such as the inside of the Fringed Clutch Purse Project in this chapter. So, if the inside colour is important to you, there are a few ways to help control the outcome:
⢠Use the same fibre colour for all the layers to avoid any colour mixing at all.
⢠Use the same combination of colours for each of the three layers, so you are controlling how the inside looks (and it will mirror the outside). You could use a random mix or, as Iâve used in the projects in this chapter, use blending bands of colour to create a gentle ombre effect.
⢠If you are using different colours for each layer of fibre in a project, fully complete each separate layer on both sides before moving on to fully complete the next layer. This keeps the inside layer a consistent colour. If you lay out all two or three layers together on one side and then overlap them around the template before laying out the fibre on the other side, thereâs a risk that colours from the top and middle layers will appear on the inside on the other side.
