Chapter Twelve

Cy had a spacious and quite luxurious truck. While getting comfortable in the back seat, I watched through the window as Colby punched Ben in the gut before smiling and getting in beside me as though nothing had happened. He reached down and held my hand for the duration of the drive to town which caused my cheeks to heat and a smile to keep returning to my lips. Colby’s muscular arms repeatedly drew my attention. I kept imagining what it would feel like to run my hands all over him. However, then my thoughts would turn to Sam and how he felt moving between my thighs. Colby was gorgeous and sweet, but he didn’t make my heart pound the way the infuriating Chief Sam Stillwater did. With Sam, I would never truly belong. Every time I felt as though we were getting close, he shut me out. Learning that his tribe contained bear shifters hadn’t done much to change my status as an outsider. Colby’s family seemed to welcome me eagerly, but Aponi had too. I felt ashamed of myself for thinking about Sam’s brown eyes while holding Colby’s hand.

Colby, as though sensing my thoughts, put his arm around my back and kissed my forehead. “Everything is going to be okay. Everything,” he said softly.

I nodded my head, not trusting myself to speak.

The parking lot at Duke’s was packed. Colby linked our fingers together as we walked behind Cy and Ben. Inside, most of the tables were taken. William Brady waved Cy over to share a long table that was only partially full. I resisted as Colby began making his way to follow.

“I’m not sitting with him. You go on ahead. I’ll sit at the bar.”

“I don’t want to leave you alone in this crowd,” Colby said with a concerned frown.

“I’ll be fine. I know where we parked.”

Colby kissed my forehead and went to join his dad and brother. I noticed the jealous glare a waitress gave me before her eyes followed Colby’s delectable backside as he walked over to shake William Brady’s hand. Brady’s glance wandered over to me, but I quickly turned and moved toward the bar. That was when I saw Chief Sam Stillwater. The hard, cold fury on his face made him look like a wrathful deity. His eyes left Colby and followed my progress to the bar. Frowning, I looked away from him so that I wouldn’t tear up.

Seeing me, Duke moved a stool behind the bar, presumably so I could sit near him as he worked. He said, “You vanished earlier.”

“Did you think I would just hang around for more rejection?”

Duke raised an eyebrow at me before filling one of his waitress’s trays with mugs of draft beer.

Fingers closed over my arm, and I looked up at Sam. His long, black hair framed his strikingly handsome face, a face I loved. “What are you doing here with Colby?”

“His family invited me to stay with them until it’s safe. What do you care?” I couldn’t help the swell of tears that formed in my eyes.
