Conclusion

Parental contact can be the most challenging aspect of foster care. It is important to remember that the responsibility for making contact work in the best interests of children should be shared with the contact supervisor, social workers and, above all, the birth family. Always share your concerns, and make sure you can back these up with dates and times of incidents and issues that have caused distress. Never go along with arrangements that make you feel uncomfortable.

Talk to other foster carers about your worries. It will help you to know that they are dealing with similar issues. They may also have good practical advice, based on their knowledge of the same contact centre or contact supervisor.

None of this is to say that you should support negative contact or not raise concerns if you genuinely feel that the contact is detrimental to the child’s welfare. If you are aware of anything that happens during contact that places the child’s welfare at risk, you must immediately inform your supervising social worker, likewise if your foster child’s behaviour before and after contact is concerning you.

Contact with the birth family is important and must be promoted as far as possible; sometimes this will be challenging and sometimes it will be extremely positive. Children’s relationships with their birth parents and with siblings can be complicated but they will be lifelong, so it is important to positively support them whenever possible.
