Love Potion 3.5
by G.S. Wiley
I first got the idea there might be something queer about my new neighbor when he blew up the house during my date with Sadie "Sure Thing" Sampson.
No, that ain't true. I first got the idea there was something queer about the guy when the landlord told me he'd found someone to rent the basement apartment. "This guy don't mind the mice?" I asked. The landlord, Mr. Haverchuk, spat onto the lawn.
"How do I know? He's some dumb kid like you. As long as he keeps up with the rent and don't have too many loud parties, I could give a rat's ass." Haverchuk scowled at me, even though I'd never been even a day late with my rent, and I'd never had a loud party. Or a quiet one. I didn't have that many friends.
I didn't see this new cat until about a week after Mr. Haverchuk told me about him. I figured he must have moved in while I was at work, but I never saw a truck or nothing like that. I'd almost forgotten about him, until, like I say, I was making out on the sofa with Sure Thing Sampson, and all of a sudden, there was a boom and the house rocked around us.
"Is it an earthquake?" Sure Thing shrieked. She was a hot piece of tail, make no mistake, with one of those short blonde hairdos girls get because they think it makes them look like Marilyn Monroe. She didn't look like Marilyn, but then I was no Joe DiMaggio, either. I wasn't even an Arthur Miller.
"Stay here," I said. I ran out the door and down the stairs on the side of the house. A big billow of gray smoke poofed out of the door to the basement apartment. I flung the door open and an even bigger cloud of smoke came out. I coughed and waved my hands in front of my face. I had no clue what was going on, whether I should call the fire department or the cops or what. Then, I saw a face coming through in the smoke.
"It's all right," the face said. "Coolsville."
"It don't look coolsville," I said. He was a young guy, probably younger than me, with big Coke bottle glasses and blond hair. He was covered in some kind of thick sooty gray stuff, like a National Geographic picture of a village after a volcano. No, I don't just read them for the boobs.
"Just a slight miscalculation. I'm sorry if I've inconvenienced you."
I looked into the apartment. It was dark, but if it looked half as bad as this oddball did, I figured his ass was going to be grass with Haverchuk. Not my problem, though. "Okay. Later."
I headed for the stairs and ran into Sure Thing coming down. She had her purse over one arm and her coat over the other.
"Hey, where are you going?"
"Listen, Tony, you're a great guy, but I don't dig wacky stuff." She glanced toward the apartment.
