Limiting artificial sweeteners is also a good idea when you are trying to eat healthier and lose weight. Not only are they proven to be cancer-causing agents, but they also stimulate your appetite. They are so prevalent in diet products because when they cut sugar, they dump in a myriad of artificial sweeteners for taste. It's common to find them in diet soda, ice cream, low-calorie snacks, and even some flavored water.

Reading the Labels

We're a society that is driven by visuals, and the same holds true for food packaging. If the front of the package says sugar-free, we tend to believe the food contained inside is much healthier. Unfortunately, you can't believe everything you read. Food manufacturers have become much more savvy about the words they use to describe their food. For example, it may say sugar-free, but look at the ingredients, and you'll find it contains corn syrup, glucose, cane, high fructose, and Maltodextrin—all sugars. Likewise, you might see an item that proudly prints "whole wheat" on the front of the package, but when you look at the percentage of whole wheat on the ingredients label, it's too low to matter. When you read the ingredients, it's important to understand that the first four ingredients listed are going to be the ones of which the food is mostly made. The long list of "so-called" healthy ingredients that are located far down on the list have merely been added so they can call their food healthy, organic, or whole whatever.
