Chapter XIII

Michael Farr paced the floor of his office. Once he glanced at the brass-framed calendar on the broad desk. The last of October. Election but a few days distant. How different the summer had been from what he had planned the day Sonia Carson had come to Kingscourt for the first time. July had seen him in Washington and across the water following up loans the Trustees had made for the Farr Estate. August came and went while he was on the same business in the West. September and most of the present month had been absorbed by the Congressional campaign, meetings, speeches, more meetings, radio talks. Out of the whirl and heat and bitterness had come one satisfaction. People were interested in the working of the government as they had not been since eighteenth century days. Politics had become a personal matter to millions, who before had hardly known the first letter of the word. And millions of people had become a matter of personal concern to the politicians.

He gazed unseeingly at the single talisman rose in the slender crystal vase on his desk. Would he win out? Could he win against Brandt who had had the advantage of being in the district all summer? That wasn’t the only advantage he had enjoyed. He had had Sonia’s companionship. She had been absorbed in her work to the exclusion of everyone but Dicky and Serena and her boss. On the few evenings he had been at Kingscourt he had had opportunity for no more than a word or two with her. He had seen her but once since the evening when she had said:

“I don’t believe anyone whose name is Farr!”

Had she avoided him? If she had, why? Was it her way of letting him know that she did not care for him? He had tried to appear indifferent to her moods. If she realized how passionately he loved her she might feel that she must leave his home. Now, he would make her stop, look, listen. The long expected letter from Guy had arrived.

He dropped into a chair at the broad desk and picked up the closely written sheets of paper which had come in the morning mail. He frowned as he read.
