The general performance of black officers in the 92nd speaks well for the division. For example, Charles Blackwood (1896–1982), who graduated as a lieutenant from Fort Des Moines and led soldiers as an infantry officer for the 92nd, was awarded three combat battle stars in France for valor in the Meuse-Argonne and in Saint-Dié sector. He is representative of the hundreds of black officers in the 92nd who never received full recognition for fighting honorably during the war. After the war, he went to work as an expert electrician for C&S Railroad, remained in the military reserves, and served as a major during World War II, leading enlisted men and junior officers at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Blackwood retired as a reserve lieutenant colonel in 1948. He was living proof that black officers, despite the 1925 report, could and did lead well.
