A bungler even in its disgusting trade,

And botching, patching, leaving still behind

Something of which its masters are afraid,

States to be curb’d and thoughts to be confined,

Conspiracy or Congress to be made –

Cobbling at manacles for all mankind –

A tinkering slave-maker, who mends old chains,

With God and man’s abhorrence for its gains.

It’s magnificent in its cold anger – or it would be, if we could take Byron entirely seriously. People couldn’t then, despite his Europe-wide fame; and most readers can’t now. The same goes, sadly, for his beautiful love lyrics: because we know so much about the man, including his enthusiasm for sodomising his lovers, how can we really swoon over something as luscious and pure-seeming as this?
