ZORA

I had met the children of Elijah and Carmen long ago in my dreams. I felt them, mostly. Saw the beautiful brown eyes of the little one, and the proud posture of the big one. He was most like Elijah. Almost identical energy but different because he had a little more love in his heart even if he didn’t know it.

Seeing them here, grown, and chatting with my baby girls made me want to jump for joy in a way I thought would never be possible.

How could I, of all people, be excited about this day, one might ask and even admonish me because of how much misery Elijah had brought me but it was simple for me, really. I had love. Real love. That love was deep inside of me, and it filled me up with so much I couldn’t help but help others find it now. Long gone were the days I cried myself to sleep or wanted to curse Elijah with every breath left in me. I only wanted him well and everything pertaining to him well because I knew now that his happiness would be the happiness of my daughters. He had been the missing link and only I could help them find it. They wouldn’t have known where to look if I hadn’t first told them the entire story and then pushed them to have this meeting.

In the kitchen now I hummed a tune I created while I gardened one day last week, and I made plates filled with baked beans, beef ribs, and potato salad before pouring red plastic cups with fresh squeezed lemonade. I grabbed a tray on the island behind me and sat it down in front of me on the counter, proceeding to place everything on it, just as Solomon came in to help.

“You are the most beautiful woman in the world, baby.” His kiss landed on my lips, and I felt my head spin just long enough for me to want time alone with him.

“I’ll take this out for you,” he said once he released me, grabbing the tray from the counter.

Smoke appeared behind Solomon and the two of them looked at each other. Smoke lifted his chin before looking my way. Solomon rounded him with the tray. Goodness, they were having a harder time than the children.

“Thank you, Solomon. I’ll be right out.”

Elijah watched Solomon exit before giving me his attention. His intense stare made parts of my body tingle that had no business tingling with him. How it was that a man who used to make my blood boil in anger could make me even remotely feel something like pleasure now was beyond me.

I busied myself with wiping the counter to clean off the crumbs and sauce left behind from my ministrations. When he seemed in no hurry to get to the point of him coming in here, I knew I needed to push him along.

“You wanted something?”

I looked at him in his dark brown eyes. The man was still fine and shouldn’t be left alone for long looking the way he did.
