Aston

I HAD A headache. I was still exhausted. All day, every day for the last two weeks, it had been a struggle to get through the day without needing a nap.

For the first week, I’d attributed the fatigue to the emotional upheaval in my life. My brother wasn’t doing so hot. I knew he was trying to be strong for his mom, which meant the only time he allowed himself to be vulnerable and fall apart was when he talked to me.

My father was still in New York, but my mom had returned to Denver. She called and asked if she could visit me. I guiltily told her it wasn’t a good time because of work. I loved my mother dearly, but she could be suffocatingly overprotective. I knew she was worried about how I was doing after the news about Kallie and wanted to see for herself how I was holding both myself and Royce up.

My parents didn’t know I was practically living with Zowen Archer.

I hadn’t figured out a way to tell them we’d reconnected after he was released from prison. Not that my parents held anything against Zowen. In fact, my father was very close to him. They bonded over their love of all things fast and dangerous. My mom was a trickier case. She had been really invested in my relationship with Ry. I thought she had been more heartbroken when I broke up with him than either he or I had been. Ry was a great guy, and his mom had saved my life when I was a baby. I thought my mother had idealized how safe and perfect my life would be in the future if I stayed with Ry. He was a low-risk/high-reward partner, and there was honestly nothing more my mom wanted for me. It felt like she’d forgotten that happiness and fulfillment needed to rank somewhere very high on the list.

Zowen wasn’t as much of a knight in shining armor as Ry was.

He liked to race motorcycles. He knew how to hack secure internet systems. He never hesitated to follow after his sister regardless of the danger and uncertainty. And now, he was someone who had survived a prison sentence. He was never going to be someone my mother looked at as a good bet. She’s always been leery of himf. Back in the day, when he had loved me silently and from afar, my mom had warned me not to take my eyes off the Archer in front of me. Now that I was older and wiser, I understood she had known if I looked away from Ry, I would end up staring at Zowen the exact same way he watched me.

“Did you catch that, Aston?”

I blinked at the sound of my name and turned my head to look at one of my coworkers. This meeting could’ve been an email, and I’d zoned out within the first five minutes.

I rubbed my temples and tried to think through the fog in my brain.
