I stare at Persephone as I come to an abrupt halt. “Leave? Do you mean with my army? To ambush Clay?” I ask this with forced optimism as her tone seemed to imply something else.

The goddess of the Underworld clears her throat and then relaxes her fingers to drop her hands and smooth the folds of her gown. “No. No. I just meant it’s time for breakfast,” she says, looking cool, gracious, and calm once again. “Where are you two running off to? It’s far too early in the morning for such a thing before breakfast. Come, join me.” She holds out an inviting hand.

I frown. Underneath her perfect exterior, I can’t help but think she looks exhausted. Stressed, maybe. I can’t quite put my finger on it. I glance through the latticework into the garden she’d just vacated, but there’s nothing unusual. It’s simply one of many such gardens in Hades House.

Turning my attention back to Persephone, I say, “We’re looking for Nefeli. I’m worried.”

“So am I,” she admits with a sigh. “I’ve been so concerned that I sent another party of men to look for her, just thirty minutes ago. Hopefully, we’ll hear something soon.”

“I assume there is no news of Clay…”

“None.” Her lips thin in a line. “Not a sign. Perhaps he changed his mind?”

That would be like him. He always did have issues with following through, but instinct tells me no. He’s got a pretty strong pull toward our old home. And as far as I know, the Underworld is the only way to get there…

“Show me the portal to Earth,” I say. “Defending it needs to be our highest priority.”

“Of course. You’re right,” Persephone says. “I will show you the portal. But first come to breakfast.” She takes a few steps down the road and turns to wait, and an uneasy feeling tugs at my gut.

“No, thanks,” I say. “I should check on my army, first.”

Her smile is an understanding one, and I feel a twinge of shame for being suspicious of her. “Certainly,” she says. “I’d love so much to come with you, but I can’t ask the Mysteries of Elysium to wait. They’re here at my request, you know, to provide advice in such troubling times. I thought to ask them of Epimetheus’ plans.”

My interest zings to life. The Eleusinian Mysteries, mystic initiates devoted to Demeter and Persephone. On Earth, they were sworn to secrecy on pain of death not to divulge their purpose or rituals. Upon death, they retired to the Elysian Fields, having done something special via their purpose and rituals to have earned the right to live among heroes. I’d written an essay on the rare ancient Greek poems claiming that something special involved the ability to foresee the future.

“Perhaps I can ask them for news on Nefeli,” I suggest. I shoot the white garden gate another glance. As soon as I’m done, I’ll be back to see what’s really going on.
