The communications department floor is in complete chaos.

Officers run from one computer terminal to the other, scrutinizing endless datalogs, and small groups of technicians argue loudly to the back. The main holoscreen at the center of the room is being used to flag certain communications made out of the Residence, a team of almost a dozen officers working solely on that. Even though it’s night outside, it feels like the day has only started here.

“What’s this about?” I ask Talik. “Did Governor Coleson try to reach us again?” One of the most important figures in the IHC, Governor Bruce Coleson has been one of the loudest voices around when it comes to bitching about our occupation of Luvon. He has threatened us with economic sanctions, appealed to our morals, and sent dozens of letters begging us to pack our bags and leave the planet.

It’s ridiculous. You should never speak that loud without doing something to back it up. The more the Governor tries to reason with us, the more I realize that the IHC is completely powerless. They’re just standing in the corner of the room like idiots, holding their dicks in their hands. If they can’t even push us out of here, do they really think they stand a chance against the Coalition?

“No, I think the Governor has given up for now,” Talik replies. “Although, I have to tell you that we’ve picked up The Dauntless’ signal in this star system. Nothing of note, really. They were probably doing reconnaissance. We know Governor Coleson and The Dauntless’ captain have strong ties, so they might have come here as a favor.”

“The Dauntless was here?”

“They remained on the edge of the solar system. We picked them up by luck.”

“I figured.” I’ve heard countless stories about The Dauntless — who hasn’t heard about that stupid stunt they pulled in Yavion? — but it sounds like they’re not willing to pick a fight with us. It’s a shame. I’d love to see how Captain Yaal would measure up against me. Vakutan and a clone? If anything, he must be a tough one to knock out.

“But I didn’t ask you to come here because of that,” Talik continues. Leading the way, he takes us toward the main holoscreen, a holographic projection at the center of a twenty-person workstation. The screen is occupied with a stream of endless data, and I keep my silence as I watch the communication officers wrestle with it.

“What am I looking at?”

“Those are the logs for every communication made out of the Residence in the past three months. We have thousands of communication events logged, and we’re trying to analyze them as fast as we can.”

“And why is that?” I can tell that Talik’s trying to make this moment last longer. Whatever it is he wants to show me, he’s building up to it. The asshole must be proud of what he’s uncovered. What is he looking for? A pat on the back and a biscuit?

“I’m afraid I don’t have good news for you, sir.
