Tera:

“Terr? Is thatchyou, Terr?” My brother’s speech is faster than most people’s, a lot of his words slurred, which makes it difficult to decipher. But God, how I missed it. I miss him. I can hear the differences now thanks to the speech therapy.

“It’s me, Kenny,” I say.

Relion and I arrived a couple of minutes ago, asked for Mother Christina at the front desk only to find out she was traveling with other administrators to different distributors, today of all days. I won’t get to see her. Now we stand in the doorway of Kenny’s wing like stalkers, watching him interact with the same group of friends he had last time I was here. Ree’s kept a hand on my lower back and a tentacle wrapped around an ankle the entire time. He’s tasting me, making sure I’m emotionally okay.

Part of me wonders if Kenny would pretend to have forgotten me but no. Of course not. Kenneth loves me, he’s always loved me, he’ll never forget me twice.

He jumps into my arms, his body heavier now that he’s older. He presses sloppy kisses on my face. “I mitchedyou. Mitchedyou. Ware’ve youbin, Terr?”

I can tell Relion has a hard time following Kenneth’s excited speech. He has a terrible habit of running his words together when he’s excited—well, it’s only terrible for other people who can’t understand him. I figure once you get to know him, it’s just fine to let him talk however he wants.

“I got a job, baby,” I say, pulling him back to the sofa where we can sit.

His eyebrows knit together. “Looong job,” he says grumpily.

“I couldn’t get away,” I assure him, smoothing his hair from his forehead. “If I could have, I’d have been right here with you.” Hoping to distract his bad mood, I hurry and change the subject. “What have you been up to? What have you learned?”

His eyes light up and if I ever had any doubts that I didn’t do the right thing by leaving, they’re dispelled. He’s so grown up, so much happiness in his beautiful brown eyes.

“Ican make a girlcheese sanwich,” he says, proudly. “I’ma chef.” He pronounces the word with a hard ch sound, giving a little giggle and a shy look at some of the others who have come to congregate around us.

“He is a shef,” a long-haired, freckled girl agrees. “He makes da best grill cheese sangwich.”

“It’s sand-witch,” a skinnier, dark-haired boy says. “Sangwich is baby talk.”

“Nuh uh,” she blusters. “I like to say sangwich.”

“Thisis ma fwends,” Kenneth says. “Jinny. Sammy. Uween. Sushi.” He starts to point out others in the room, saying their names. Some of them acknowledge us, others stare curiously at Relion standing near us.

Kenneth notices. “Who—who this?”

“Kenny, this is my friend. His name is Relion. R-E-L-I-O-N.” I spell it out for him after pronouncing it slowly. “Relion, my brother, Kenneth Michael Garrett.”

Kenny breaks into a wide smile. “Thaz diffrent,” he says, gesturing to Relion’s tentacles. “I lika it.”

“Thank you,” Relion says, giving his tentacles an extra rolling wiggle from his hips all the way down to the tips.
