St. Michaels had given them very little in the way of information and now, as the sun set, Parker’s carriage rumbled onto the streets of Liverpool while he sat next to Laurel on the bench seat.

They’d surely be able to hide from Laurel’s family and friends here, that much was certain. But in terms of finding answers…

How would they ever happen upon any?

Laurel let out a heavy sigh next to him. “Is it as hopeless as I fear?”

He pulled her closer, not wishing to speak the whole truth. “What we need is a warm dinner and a comfortable bed. All will look brighter in the morning.”

“I think you’re right,” she said as she burrowed closer. “And I shouldn’t allow tiredness to make me despondent. We discovered another piece of the puzzle today and that is cause for celebration.”

“And we avoided discovery.”

She smiled up at him. “Very true.”

And he held her in his arms. A place she’d been most of the day. That, in and of itself, seemed like a victory to him.

“I wonder,” he murmured against the top of her head. “When we’re done searching, if we ought to just travel to Gretna Green.”

She stiffened in his arms, looking up at him. “Elope?”

“That’s right,” he said even as he shifted under her weight. Had he pushed too far, too fast? He knew where they were headed, but she might not be ready to hear such things.

“Marry without my brother’s consent?”

She had a point there. “You would ask his permission first? Under these circumstances?”

She shook her head. “I don’t know. I’ll have to think on it.” But she didn’t relax again and as he looked down at her, she appeared just a touch worried. “You’re not ready…”

She shook her head. “I don’t know. That’s the honest truth. I couldn’t see my future at all before yesterday. It’s only starting to become clear.” But then her features relaxed into a smile. “I know it involves you.”

He relaxed at those words too. “Good.”

The carriage stopped and they made their way into an inn where they each had a bowl of the stew that was served to all travelers and then they made their way up to their adjoining rooms. But as he stopped at Laurel’s door, he hesitated. Did he ask if she needed him with her tonight or was he pushing again?

She hesitated too, her hands coming together as she stood in the doorway. “About last night…”

He winced, giving a nod. “I know. I overstepped.”

She shook her head. “No. It was…” She looked up at the ceiling before her eyes met his again. “The best sleep I’ve had in forever.”

He reached up, stroking his thumb over her cheekbone. “I see.” He moved closer. “Shall I join you again this evening?”

“Is it…” She nipped at her lip. “Too much to ask?”

“Not at all,” he answered, relieved to know he’d hold her in his arms. “I’ll see you shortly.”

She closed the door, and he made his way to his room, pulling at his cravat the moment his own door was closed and locked.
