Chapter Thirteen

Anya:

THE KITCHEN IS BUSY first thing in the morning, churning out pancakes smeared with softened butter and omelets stuffed with a variety of vegetables. The girls have it running like a well-oiled assembly line. Some of them take platters of food to our guests in the dining room, where everyone else sits and eats. In addition, some of the Adroki males have built tables which stretch out in the dance studio. They fold, which can easily be stuffed in the hallway that leads to the front door from our studio. The only time they’ll have to be retrieved is when we have guests—by the guest themselves, thanks to the laser housed there.

Relion and Tera huddle in the studio, where he installs the deadbolt for the front door as she calls out instructions from the safety of the long hallway. He caters to her every whim, but then again, all the Adroki males do for the human girls. They’re determined to make sure there are no more surprise visits from someone who has a key.

The televised matching ceremony takes place at the Presidential House before noon. The Adroki will leave soon since the couple will be escorted through the portal and back to their planet.

Everything stops when multiple pods and the Presidential limo pull into our yard.

Eric Montgomery gets out and slams the door hard enough to rattle the entire car.

“This is against the treaty,” he bellows to Mikhail, who emerges from one of the pods along with two other Britonians. “These aliens can’t just infiltrate Earth and stay the night wherever they please! What is it about portal guarding that allows that? Am I allowed to land on their planet, stay the night on a beach of gold, and then return home the next day?”

“It isn’t against policy,” Mikhail says calmly. “Lilaina has dual citizenship and has respectfully requested entry a day early for the Match. She brought her bodyguards, companions, and babysitters. All royal guard.”

“And they can just stay wherever they please?” President Montgomery snaps. “Without formal request from the President of Earth?”

Mikhail shrugs. “You informed us that this annexed land does not fall under Earth reign. They do not need permission from Earth to stay there.”

Lilaina grins, her mate glued to her side. His tentacle winds around her waist. “Greetings of the new dawn, Mikhail. Father.”

“Blessings, Lilaina,” Mikhail says.

President Montgomery says nothing, but the expression on his cruel face subtly shifts. No longer infuriated but more . . . pleased? He has something up his sleeve.

“Well, I imagine since we are all here,” he stresses, “we may as well televise the announcement from this location instead of shipping everyone to the Presidential House grounds.”

Mikhail’s eyes narrow. “As you wish.”

The President’s focus turns to me. “Anya, my love, we should talk beforehand—”

“No,” Jaire growls. “Stay away from her.”

“I think a woman can speak for herself,” Eric says in a strange role-reversal. A drone hovers near his head, the red eye blinking as it records the scene.

Just like that, Jaire looks like the control freak that Eric is.
