The death of Llywelyn the Last handed Wales to King Edward I of England. There was nobody left who was strong enough to stand up to him. The prince of Powys, Owain ap Gruffydd, chose to give up his title of prince and to take an oath of loyalty to Edward, just as the English lords did. In return he was allowed to keep his lands.

One of Edward’s first acts after Llywelyn’s death was to enact the Statute of Rhuddlan in 1284. This new law abolished the principality of Gwynedd and made it part of England. English criminal law now applied in Gwynedd as well, but for civil cases (arguments about contracts and inheritances, for example) the old Welsh laws of Hywel Dda remained in force.
