Vera

The longer I wait, the more determined I become. When that immigration official turns up, I’m going to tell them to stick their visa right where the sun doesn’t shine.

The minutes tick over slowly, painfully. A couple beside me are entangled in each other. I guess they’re doing their best to make their relationship come off as genuine.

I huff quietly in irritation. Get married. What a dumb fucking idea that was. I do my best not to think of Erica but it’s really difficult. I don’t want to resent her for not being here, but I kind of can’t help it. This is my future.

Apparently the end of my American future.

“I love you so much,” the girl besides me croons. Her husband, I assume, replies in a heavy accent,” The girl continues. “It doesn’t matter if this doesn’t work out. I’ll come live with you anywhere in the world.”

As much as I’m entirely disgusted by this whole process, I do feel a twinge of jealousy in my stomach. Imagine knowing that there’s someone willing to move anywhere in the world just to be with you. I sigh again.

The couple go in, and I’m left in peace for a while.

“Vera Delain?” A woman opens a door. “Are you ready to come in?”

I glance down the empty corridor one last time before standing up.

“Um, actually….”

There’s a raucous commotion to my left. A door opens with a bang and there’s a clatter of heels on the polished floor.

“Honey! I’m here! I’m here. Oh god, I’m so sorry I’m late. God, so typical of me to almost miss one of the most important moments of our relationship.” My jaw practically hits the ground as I find myself tugged into Erica’s embrace.

“Hey, babe. So sorry I’m late. I hope not too late?” She beams at the woman holding open the door as she firmly tucks her arm around my waist and plants a kiss on my cheek.

It’s like I’ve forgotten how to breathe.

“Please come in,” the lady says. I look over to Erica who looks remarkably calm and I grab hold of her hand, desperately trying to hold onto whatever hope I have left. Erica gives my hand a comforting squeezes and winks at me.

“Let’s go, my love.”

I swear these things are designed to make you fail. Well, I suppose they actually are. The room is sparse and feels vaguely like an interrogation room. It’s not exactly helpful when your future is on the line.

The immigration lady sits down on the other side of a desk and pulls out a long sheet of questions.

“Are you ready to get started?” She asks. I nod, finding it difficult to find my voice. Erica, however, smiles enthusiastically.

“We sure are! Give us your worst.” God, no, I think, cutting off the circulation in her hand.

“Part of the interview will be conducted individually and part of it will be done while you are together. We’ll begin with the second part, while I have you both here. Remember that these are not supposed to be confusing questions.
