Chapter Five

Drew had never been so scared. To see the terror on his mother’s face had been one thing, but to then see his father lying on the floor was quite another.

The moments after that were a blur. Lots of commotion, the paramedics, everything a blur. Cat holding on to his arm, comforting him the best she could. Cat talking to the paramedics. Cat hugging his mother.

And now they all sat in the tiny waiting room at the local hospital. His father had stood up from the bed and then immediately fallen to the floor, hitting his head on the nightstand on the way down.

When Drew arrived in the room, he had a cut on his head and was conscious again, but Susan had said he blacked out or something before that.

Now they waited for word from the doctor. They’d followed the ambulance there since Susan was in no shape to drive. Cat held his mother’s hand and stroked it, whispering calming words to her the whole time.

As concerned as he was for his father, he was also impressed by Cat. Her sense of calm in the midst of a storm. Her kind nature. The way she just “fit in” to their family, like the missing piece he didn’t know they’d been missing.

“Mrs. Milton?” a young doctor called as he came through the double doors leading to the waiting room.

“Yes?” Susan said, immediately shooting up from her chair.

“Your husband is going to be fine,” he started. Drew breathed a sigh of relief. “Follow me, please.”

The doctor led the three of them to a small room inside of the double doored area. They all sat down.

“I’m Dr. Evans,” he said, reaching out to shake each of their hands.

“Dr. Evans, can I see my husband?” Susan asked.

“You can see him very soon. We’re moving him from the ER into a room soon. We’d like to monitor him overnight.”

“What’s wrong with him?” Drew asked.

“Well, for one thing, he’s stubborn,” the doctor said with a laugh.

“True story,” Drew responded. That elicited a giggle from Cat too.

“I understand he’s recently had surgery, but apparently he hasn’t been moving a lot. He’s also quite dehydrated. Those two things combined caused what we refer to as vasovagal syncope. That’s when there’s a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure which often leads to fainting. It’s actually very common.”

“Will he be okay?” Susan asked, the look of worry on her face.

“Yes. We want to monitor him overnight due to the bump on his head, and we’d like to get him rehydrated properly. You’ll need to make sure he’s drinking more at home.”

“Oh, I’ll make sure of that…” Susan mumbled. Drew laughed at the mental image of his mother holding his father down and force-feeding him bottles of water.

“And I understand he has an in-house physical therapist?”

“Yes, that’s me. We just started a few days ago, but I will definitely make sure he’s moving more.” Cat said.

“Great. I’d like to chat with you for a few minutes about some ideas to try with him.
