Chapter Five
Drew had never been so scared. To see the terror on his motherâs face had been one thing, but to then see his father lying on the floor was quite another.
The moments after that were a blur. Lots of commotion, the paramedics, everything a blur. Cat holding on to his arm, comforting him the best she could. Cat talking to the paramedics. Cat hugging his mother.
And now they all sat in the tiny waiting room at the local hospital. His father had stood up from the bed and then immediately fallen to the floor, hitting his head on the nightstand on the way down.
When Drew arrived in the room, he had a cut on his head and was conscious again, but Susan had said he blacked out or something before that.
Now they waited for word from the doctor. Theyâd followed the ambulance there since Susan was in no shape to drive. Cat held his motherâs hand and stroked it, whispering calming words to her the whole time.
As concerned as he was for his father, he was also impressed by Cat. Her sense of calm in the midst of a storm. Her kind nature. The way she just âfit inâ to their family, like the missing piece he didnât know theyâd been missing.
âMrs. Milton?â a young doctor called as he came through the double doors leading to the waiting room.
âYes?â Susan said, immediately shooting up from her chair.
âYour husband is going to be fine,â he started. Drew breathed a sigh of relief. âFollow me, please.â
The doctor led the three of them to a small room inside of the double doored area. They all sat down.
âIâm Dr. Evans,â he said, reaching out to shake each of their hands.
âDr. Evans, can I see my husband?â Susan asked.
âYou can see him very soon. Weâre moving him from the ER into a room soon. Weâd like to monitor him overnight.â
âWhatâs wrong with him?â Drew asked.
âWell, for one thing, heâs stubborn,â the doctor said with a laugh.
âTrue story,â Drew responded. That elicited a giggle from Cat too.
âI understand heâs recently had surgery, but apparently he hasnât been moving a lot. Heâs also quite dehydrated. Those two things combined caused what we refer to as vasovagal syncope. Thatâs when thereâs a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure which often leads to fainting. Itâs actually very common.â
âWill he be okay?â Susan asked, the look of worry on her face.
âYes. We want to monitor him overnight due to the bump on his head, and weâd like to get him rehydrated properly. Youâll need to make sure heâs drinking more at home.â
âOh, Iâll make sure of thatâ¦â Susan mumbled. Drew laughed at the mental image of his mother holding his father down and force-feeding him bottles of water.
âAnd I understand he has an in-house physical therapist?â
âYes, thatâs me. We just started a few days ago, but I will definitely make sure heâs moving more.â Cat said.
âGreat. Iâd like to chat with you for a few minutes about some ideas to try with him.
