Chapter 8

Sophia screamed and bolted to her feet, grabbing her arm, feeling a weird pain radiating down it. She looked around frantically.

Tasha immediately hopped up, grabbed Sophia by her shoulders, and softly shook her. “What’s the matter?”

Sophia stared at her in shock. “Didn’t you hear that?”

“Hear what?” she asked, giving her friend a headshake.

Sophia took a slow deep breath, as Damon came toward her, his gaze intense.

“Didn’t you feel any pain?” Sophia frantically asked him.

He nodded slowly. “I did. What did you hear?”

“I don’t know. A muffled sound and a pain in my arm,” she stated. “It’s hard to describe.”

“Yeah, that describes it pretty decently.”

Tasha looked at Damon in surprise, and he just gave a tiny shake of his head. Tasha shrugged. “I didn’t hear it, sure didn’t feel it, and I don’t know what you’re talking about, but, whatever it is, let’s hope it’s not our guys in trouble.”

“It is.” Sophia raced to the rear door. “It’s Wade.”

“Hold on, hold on.” Damon grabbed her good arm. “We don’t just go bolting out there like that.”

She stared at him but felt the panic rising in her throat.

“I know,” he agreed. “I feel it too. Let’s just calm down. We’ll find him.” Just then his phone vibrated; he checked the screen. “That’s him now.” Damon answered the call. “Wade, what happened?”

Damon listened, his gaze going to Sophia. “Yes, I know. I heard it too, a weird ping.” He nodded. “Yeah, okay, fine. Can you get back in here without being seen? I know … I know. We’ll get the cops looped in,” he replied. “I don’t know what else we’re supposed to do. Without having the US government to back us on this, I’m afraid MI6 will start thinking we’re responsible for all these bodies.”

He listened again, while the two women stared.

“Well, they’ll twist it that way, if they don’t know the truth,” he added. “Come on in. We’re ready and waiting for you.” He immediately disconnected the call. “The kid Wade was bringing back had his head blown off just outside … Wade thinks it was a drone, probably tracking him.”

“That’s impossible. I shut down the kid’s tracker,” Sophia argued. “They must have had a visual already because I’m certain that tracker was out of the equation.”

“Unfortunately that’s quite possible,” Damon replied. “Wade seems pretty upset about the deal, as I guess the kid was only about seventeen.”

Both women gasped. Sophia was horrified and bewildered. “That’s just pathetic,” she cried out. “Why would they be using someone so young?” Then she stopped, winced. “Oh God, he’s got to be a hacker … The one trying to get into our trackers.”

“And likely completely so full of himself that he didn’t realize he was disposable,” Damon noted.

Just then came a series of alarms.

Sophia raced over to her console and muted the blaring sound. She looked at Damon and shrugged. “I just shut it down, to allow Wade entry, but surely you have a better protocol than that.”

“We have lots of protocols in place,” he replied.
