The Saints

The connections linking Voodoo and Catholicism are extraordinary. One of the trademarks of New Orleans Voodoo is the adding of components of Catholicism, particularly the saints. Each Loa is affiliated with a Catholic saint. Furthermore, the saints frequently present a more fundamental purpose than do the Loas in magic.

Using Damballa as an example, who is depicted as a serpent god and is closely associated with snakes. Damballa's Christian counterparts would be Moses, who changed a rod into a serpent in the Pharaoh's court and St. Patrick, who drove the snakes out of Ireland.

Once you understand and know the saints and their intention, you can design your own rituals to suit your need. Recognizing the saints, their associated meaning, and the corresponding Loa is vital to New Orleans Voodoo.

Remember, prayers to Saints aren't just for Catholics. Regardless of religion, prayers should motivate and influence you.

Guardian Angel - Protect yourself and children from danger and evil spirits by praying to the Guardian Angel.

Infant Jesus of Atocha - To be free from punishment, guilt, and sin, pray to the Infant Jesus of Atocha.

Miraculous Mother - To bring good things into your life, pray to the Miraculous Mother.

Our Lady of Charity - If you need protection for your home, bring in prosperity or find a lover, pray to Our Lady of Charity.

Our Lady of Guadalupe - Pray to Our Lady of Guadalupe when you need protection from curses or to overcome fear.

Our Lady of Mercy - For mental clarity, especially for during studies, pray to Our Lady of Mercy.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help - When you need help, pray to Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

Sacred Heart of Jesus - For a blessed, peaceful life, pray to Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Sacred Heart of Mary - For spiritual blessings and serenity, pray to Sacred Heart of Mary.

Seven African Powers or Saints - Pray to Seven African Powers or Saints to solve problems. This prayer is all-purpose.

St. Anthony of Padua - Pray to St. Anthony of Padua when something is lost.

St. Barbara - For love, friendship and to conquer enemies, pray to St. Barbara.

St. Bernadette - When healing is needed, pray to St. Bernadette.

St. Christopher - For protection during travel, pray to St. Christopher.

St. Dymphna - For demonic possession or mental disorders, pray to St. Dymphna.

St. Expedite - If you are in pressing need, pray to St. Expedite.

St. Joseph - Pray to St. Joseph to sell or rent a house or to find a job.

St. Jude - When you find yourself in impossible situations, pray to St. Jude.

St. Lazarus - For healing and sickness, pray to St. Lazarus.

St. Lucy - Suffering from writer's block? Pray to St. Lucy, the patron saint of writers.

St. Martin Caballero - If you're a business person wanting to draw in more customers, pray to St. Martin Caballero.

St. Martin De Porres - For comfort, health, friends, for a good life, pray to St. Martin De Porres.

St. Michael - To overcome obstacles, remove evil, and defeat your enemies, pray to St. Michael.

St. Peter - To open roads and bring you opportunities for success, pray to St.
