A quarter of all search engine requests are pornographic; and,

More than a third of Internet users report unwanted exposure to sexual material.

Not only are people’s interactions with someone they are interested in typically more sexual in nature—something that, as we have seen, can lead to ill-considered, potentially unsafe encounters—but the average person’s virtual life will necessarily expose him or her to significant sexual content, whether or not he or she is actively seeking it out. Such exposure is much higher if the person is seeking companionship and decides to consult the personals section of a favorite Web site. Here are three rather representative specimens from Craigslist, a mainstream Web site. Their language has been cleansed of overly vulgar content and of the kind of creepy netspeak innocence discussed earlier, which in this context can make the ads read like they had been written by children soliciting sex from other children:
