Michaela

I was still kneeling on the ground, staring out into the starless night sky, when William pulled himself up and stood next to me.

“Will you be all right for a moment, Michaela?” he asked. “I need to go inside and check on my brother.”

I nodded once but gave no other response. With a squeeze on my shoulder, William rose and his footsteps sounded on the pavement behind me until silence blanketed me.

Think Michaela! Where could they have taken him?

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t think of a single place.

Vivienne.

Vivienne spoke to Alexander Larsen; she would know how to get a hold of him. She didn’t believe Alexander had anything to do with this, but I needed to find out for sure. I picked myself off the ground and walked back to the church.

As soon as I stepped inside, I spotted William helping his brother to his feet. Mathias struggled to get up, but his eyes connected with mine and they narrowed. He probably wasn’t happy to have been knocked out, protecting a human. I would not apologize. Besides, I had a bigger problem. I didn’t have Vivienne’s phone number.

“William, I need you to call Vivienne for me,” I told him. “You do know who she is?” Vivienne had said she knew all the influential families in Norway.

“She works at the academy, correct?”

“Yes.”

William kept his arm around Mathias’s back until he was sure his brother could stand on his own. “Anne has her number. We will call her as soon as we return to the house.”

Desperate to be on my way to search for Hunter, I walked over to help William get Mathias inside the car. But Mathias held up his hand when I approached. “I’m fine. I can walk to the car on my own.”

Relieved rather than offended, I opened the church door and watched him walk right past me. He got into the back seat of William’s car and left the front seat open for me. I guess I should have been happy but feeling Mathias’s stare at the back of my neck made me more uncomfortable. I would have preferred to ride in the backseat.

Fortunately, it wasn’t a long drive back to the house and William had already called Anne, asking her to search for Vivienne’s number. I wasted no time when I reached the house and asked Anne to dial the number. She had it readied on her phone.

“Hello?” Vivienne answered after two rings.

“Vivienne. This is Michaela. Hunter is gone. I need to speak to Alexander. I need—”

“Wait! What happened to Hunter?” she asked.

“They took him,” my voice cracked, and I tried to steady my nerves. “And I have no idea where to find him.” A sob escaped, and I covered my mouth. “Please. I need to speak to Alexander right now.”

“All right. Meet me at Lexi’s,” said Vivienne. “I’ll be there in twenty minutes.” Then she ended the call. I turned to Anne. “Will you take me?”

She nodded and turned to her husband. “Will
