SERGEI
Kissing her makes the dispute with my brother fade at an alarming rate. Itâs been like this from the moment we first touchedâshe seems to make everything else disappear. And by everything, I mean everything. Her mouth is more addictive than heroin, a better high than ketamine. I want to drown in it, in the way she tastes, the way her tongue is shy at first, then bold.
I press her to the wall, her body soft and warm. I canât get enough.
Then her stomach growls.
I pull back. âShit. Youâre probably starving.â
âIâm all right,â she says breathlessly.
âCome on.â I take her hand and lead her from the bedroom. A very interested Trash follows, his tail twitching as he jumps ahead of us.
âYou can cook?â she asks as I open the refrigerator.
âNot much,â I admit.
âWell, youâre in luck.â She scoots up next to me. âI can take it from here.â
I look down at her. âYouâre going to cook for me?â
She shrugs. âI might as well. You didnât hand me over to your brother. I suppose thatâs worth a bit of âthank youâ food.â
I grit my teeth. âHeâs lucky I didnât break his fucking nose.â
âSo are you two on good terms or bad terms?â she asks. âI canât tell.â
I walk around the island and sit down, never taking my gaze from her. Sheâs swimming in my shirt, and I canât even see the boxers on her. But she still looks fucking amazing. How is that? I donât know. But I canât stop watching her as she lays out a few items then walks into the pantry.
âSal is â¦â I donât exactly know how to explain him.
âComplicated?â She returns with a small jar of cinnamon, an unopened bag of brown sugar, and half a loaf of bread.
âYou could say that. Heâs my younger brother. Always trying to prove himself. Typical little brother shit.â
âPlates?â she asks.
I point to the cabinet. âThere.â
âPans?â
âUnder the stovetop, but I donât have a lot to choose from soââ
âThis is perfect.â She grabs a stainless steel pan thatâs likely never been used. âMy family can be complicated too.â
I have no clue what sheâs cooking up, but Iâm enjoying every move she makes. âI thought the Fernandinos were perfect in every way.â I snort.
She gives me a sharp look over her shoulder. âYouâve been laboring under a misconception. Iâm the only perfect one,â she says airily.
A laugh barrels out of me. God, I love her smart mouth.
âYou disagree?â
âI didnât say that.â I lean forward on my elbows.
âGood.â She flips on the burner and puts some butter in the pan, her back to me. âIâm glad you agree.â
Sheâs something else.
âAnyway, as I was saying, my family can be a mess. Vincent is obsessed with guns and being tough and all that macho bullshit. Leon is obsessed with his hair and his clothes. Ginaââshe waves a spatulaââsheâs actually wonderful. Sheâll be a great mother. Kindhearted to a fault. She listens. Always listens. No matter what nonsense comes out of Vincentâs or Leonâs mouths, she listens.
