Punishment for edification
The crime of the Assyrians was not a surprise. But their cruelty was intended not only to Babylon, it fell upon all the rebellious cities. Executions of people who were put on a stake, burned, beheaded, mass deportations of survivors, robberies, fires and destruction of cities were a common occurrence. In addition, all the committed atrocities serve the Assyrians as a means of psychological influence. Sowing fear and horror, they seek to suppress any desire for rebellion from other cities and countries. The Babylonians, their neighbors and the Assyrians themselves are surprised and astounded by the fact that Sinaherib dared to destroy the city, which was considered one of the main holy places of Mesopotamia, which was under the auspices of the god Marduk, as well as a major cultural center. That is why, when in 681 BC there is a murder of Sinaherib, many see this as the revenge of the Babylonian god. Asarhaddon, his successor, seeks to rebuild the city. But it is too late to extinguish in the hearts of the Babylonians the hatred that they have for Assyria: they will avenge themselves in 612 BC. Together with the allies, the Babylonians will destroy Assyria and its capital Nineveh. Babylon will survive the period of its decline and flourish again in the VI century BC.
