April 21st

6:59 A.M.

Tillie swung the gun in the direction of the light.

There was only one thought in her mind.

One thing propelling her.

Protect.

Not protect herself but Gabriel.

If his wound was going to kill him outright, he would already be dead. As long as he got treatment before infection set in, he could live, be happy, and save other lives.

He had a chance at a life while hers was already over.

Whether it ended today or in a week, a month, or a year, there was one thing she knew for certain, Mac O’Riley had zero plans of letting her go.

On the contrary, he’d found himself a new toy.

Eyes accustomed to the dark as they were wanted desperately to close against the sudden intrusion of light, but Tillie fought against the urge. Gabriel had passed out again after giving them both a chance at survival. A chance she wasn’t going to squander.

It was all on her, and she wasn’t going to let Gabriel down, not after he’d risked everything for her and almost lost his life in the process.

None of the mercenaries or O’Riley’s men thought she was any threat, but as soon as they saw that body, they would know that she was.

That meant if she didn’t find a way to get free now, she might never get another chance.

To get herself and Gabriel out of here, she absolutely would kill these men, too, if she had to.

Protect herself and Gabriel, that was her only goal.

Her only focus.

Straightening her arms, she held the weapon steady. Not an easy thing to do when tremors of fear rippled through her entire body.

“Put the gun down,” a voice ordered.

Yeah, right.

No way she was doing that.

Did he think she was crazy?

“Put the gun down, now.”

Despite the fact she was aiming her weapon right at them, they didn’t stop moving toward her. There were four of them dressed all in black with huge weapons—much bigger than her own—in their arms, pointed right at her as they tried to get to Gabriel.

Shooting a real person was so very different than shooting the paper targets at the range. Tillie had learned to shoot not long after she graduated high school. In college, there had been some people who had put two and two together and discovered her real identity.

After that, there had been several incidents where people accosted her, threatened her, even going so far as to break into her apartment. Not feeling safe alone, she’d signed up for lessons to learn how to use a gun and then purchased one when she felt comfortable enough. Over the years, she made sure to keep her training up, but nothing could really have prepared her for shooting a living, breathing human being.

One who wouldn’t hesitate to kill her, but still a human being.

These men wouldn’t hesitate to hurt her either. She could see it in the confident way they continued moving like they knew she didn’t really have the guts to shoot them.

If it wasn’t for Gabriel relying on her, she might not have.
