I hold my breath. I’m already keeping a couple of things from her to get her to agree to this.

I don’t want to lose her trust, but from everything that’s been happening, it’s more obvious than ever that this girl needs the protection of a full pack.

Carson is a piece of shit. He can’t be allowed near her. Everett is pissed as hell, from what Oscar’s told me. He doesn’t want to enslave a witch, which is apparently why he ignored Oscar’s plea to bite her and bring her into our pack.

For once, I know something he doesn’t. He doesn’t have to enslave a witch. Cheryl’s part wolf. I sensed that even when I was out of it on whatever drugs the doctor pumped into me in the nurse’s office. I almost forgot it again when I started to feel better. It came back when I started to wonder how a witch could be a wolf’s true mate.

Everett’s an Alpha. He’ll know what Cheryl is when he finally actually meets her.

She takes my hand and I relax. My true mate trusts me, and she’s embracing her instincts.

I push back the immediate desire to pull her into my arms. It would be easy to get lost in the haze of lust. The honeymoon period of a true mating can last months. We’ll have plenty of time to spend in bed together when this hellish night is over.

“I need shoes,” she tells me, letting go of my hand. She sits to put her sneakers on. Then she picks up a short leather jacket and throws it on. She grabs her purse last, slinging it over her shoulder. “Okay. I’m ready.”

“I need to pre-warn you,” I tell her. “Everett can be kind of an asshole.”

“Aren’t you going to tack on that he means well?” she asks, shooting me a wry smile.

Her lips are still jet black in spite of all the kissing. I’d been a little disappointed it hadn’t rubbed off on me when I looked in her bathroom mirror. I liked the thought of her mark being on me. Even if it was just makeup.

“Um, no,” I tell her, smiling as she unlocks the door to let us out. “He’s just an asshole, really.”

She laughs. “Well, thanks for the warning, I guess.”
