David woke up suddenly, listening quietly in the darkness. What was that noise he’d heard? Thump. Thump. There it was again.

He got out of bed, glad he kept his socks and drawers on last night. It made it easier to slip out of the room and investigate the noise.

No lamps were lit in the hall, but the noise seemed to be coming from the sitting room near the front door. Thump. Thump. What in the world was it? He turned on the light. Vera was near the chair, holding a vase of fresh wildflowers.

“Oh, it’s you. What are you doing?”

She didn’t answer him.

“Vera, what’s going on?”

She looked up at him blankly. “I’m getting a drink of water,” she said, as she quickly took the flowers out of the vase and drank the water before he could react.

She put the flowers back in the vase and set it back down, before turning and walking down the hall back to her room.

David followed her back to her room, watched her get back into bed, and turn over, already fast asleep.

“Vera?” he asked, then tried a little louder. “Vera.” She didn’t wake up from her slumber. What a strange event, he thought, before he went back to his own room. He’d have to ask her about this tomorrow morning.
