chapter 2 6 âª
* * *
Cornyâs mind told him to give up, that Mollie was gone, and they would never find her, but his heart told him to keep going. His heart won out and forced his mind to silence itself. There was no way he would ever give up on Mollie. Even if he had to spend the rest of his life searching for her, he would keep searching.
He prayed she was okay, and that Vincent had not already forced himself upon her. Such a thought left him angry enough to wish Vincent a slow, painful death. He glanced at Ernest and her brothers, wondering if theyâd had similar thoughts.
âWe ought to get Rex,â said Perry.
That sounded like a fine idea, but how? One of them would have to leave the search and ride to Thunder Hill. By the time they rode there and back, they might already have found Mollie. Or they might have lost their only opportunity to find her.
They talked it over and decided they were better off sticking together. Besides, Vincent had shown up in Thunder Hill once already. Who was to say he wouldnât do it again? Better that Rex stay where he was at, then theyâd have eyes and ears in multiple places.
The air was dry and the land they rode over matched it. The hills rolling in the distance were a dismal brown with only patches of green. The rain had yet to come and make it grow into the rich, vibrant colors it would become later, once summer had settled in.
It should have been easy to track Vincentâs horse, but when Corny looked down, he could not even see his own horseâs tracks. The ground was packed too tightly to leave much of a trail. All they could do was continue in the last direction they knew Vincent had been carrying her.
âWhat do you think he means to do with her?â asked Ernest.
The others all looked at him, their silence expressing the thoughts Corny had had not long ago. No one said anything, and Ernest filled in his own blanks. A half hour went by, and they heard no screams or cries for help.
A small farm, just big enough to raise some chickens and a few cows, was up ahead in the distance. Corny and the others saw a man working in the field. He watched them ride past, a slightly suspicious look on his face as was common with most men on their own this far out.
Corny hesitated then turned and went over to him. The farmer stood straight, a pitchfork in his hand. Corny did not venture too close. âGood afternoon,â Corny said.
The man nodded politely, his eyes moving slowly across the faces of the others who lingered in the back. âSomething I can do for you fellas?â
Corny nodded. âHave you seen a man and woman come past here on horseback recently? Maybe the last hour or so?â
The farmer looked hard at Corny and asked why he wanted to know.
