Meaty lentil ball sauce

My mom used to make this sauce with meatballs when I wasn’t a vegan yet. I loved it, and now I am happy to present you my vegan version of it. It’s almost identical to the original recipe. The balls are meaty in the creamy sauce, and it goes perfectly with potatoes—a really hearty main dish.

Serves 4–6

• 3 Tablespoons oil

• 1 onion

• ½ teaspoon salt

• pinch of ground black pepper

• ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

• ½ cup all-purpose flour

• 4½ cups hot water

• 1 Tablespoon dried dill

• ½ Tablespoon vegetable stock powder

• 1–2 Tablespoons soy sauce

• ½ cup vegan cream

• 15–17 meaty lentil balls (see page TK)

Heat oil in a thick-bottomed pot. Add chopped onions, salt, pepper, and ground nutmeg. Cook for a couple of minutes. Add flour and stir with a fork for about 30 seconds. Now add water and stir very well. Add dried dill, vegetable stock powder, soy sauce, and cream. Stir and simmer on medium heat for 5 minutes. Add lentil balls, stir, bring to a boil, and remove from heat.
