Chapter Fourteen
Last night, as Iâd taken my leave after informing her about the gala, Iâd thought, poor Kartina, because I knew how uncomfortable sheâd be with having someone fix her hair and put makeup on her face. I also knew sheâd hate to wear something as feminine and form-fitting as any one of the formal gowns Iânot Julesâhad picked out for her.
Tonight, however, I thought, poor Drake, because how the hell was I going to survive this evening?
My attraction to Kartina had reached obsessive levels when sheâd done nothing more than throw on a baggy shirt and a pair of leggings.
Tonight, she was as exquisite as a queen, which was most certainly not easing my fixation on the woman.
Iâd selected dresses in varying shades of black and brown because Iâd expected she would want to be as unassuming as possible, despite having to wear something that, no matter what color it was, would put her on display. Me being me, however, Iâd tossed in a few brightly colored gowns as well, because, yes, I now had fantasies tied up in the red one Iâd chosen.
And then sheâd appeared at the top of the stairs, wearing a strapless, pale pink dress with an uneven hem that flared slightly before draping to mid-calf. Her footwear was high-heeled, with one strap around her toes and one around her ankles, in the same color as the gown. Her nails were iridescent pink. She clutched a matching handbag, and her only jewelry was a pair of shoulder-skimming earrings I was certain were diamonds.
Her hair was pulled into a deliberately messy bun at the base of her neck, with tendrils curling enticingly around her face. They looked lighter than they had the last time I saw her. Had the stylist added highlights?
And her face, that lovely, cherub face Iâd already found so incredibly intriguing, was practically glowing. I was reminded of when Iâd caught my first glimpse of her smile and Iâd thought she looked like an angel. At the moment, she was clearly nervous, and yet she appeared still more angelic, with face powder that obviously had glitter in it, smoky eye makeup, and a lip gloss with almost no color but loads of shine.
âAbsolutely exquisite,â I murmured, staring up at her.
Her eyes widened slightly. How in the world could she not realize how incredibly breathtaking she was?
I heard a giggle and tore my gaze away from the vision to glance at Sasha, who leaned over the railing a few feet away, smirking at me.
âTold you heâd be speechless,â she said.
âI spoke,â I replied. Although she was rightâ for a long moment, I had been speechless. And I was both excited and dreading having this woman on my arm for the duration of the evening.
âBarely,â Sasha replied.
I was a twelve-hundred-year-old Viking turned vampire, living with three human women, and not a one was remotely afraid of me.
Funny how that wasnât at all emasculating.
When Kartina did not attempt to walk down the stairs, I whispered out of the side of my mouth, âHas she ever worn heels before?â
Sasha snickered.
