Chapter 11

Riley

Had I known Tricia’s decision would double her powers and result in leveling every single gravestone on the property, I would have taken her to any other open space but the cemetery. Now I’m screwed because survival mode kicks in. I hurdle over the hood of the sedan, sliding my ass across the glass-like sheen of the hood, and leap right into the portal that opened under her feet.

The earth has a glimmering puffy look and feel to it, but the inviting look is an illusion of fae magic. The roots and earth impale my arms, lending proof to the danger below the ground’s grassy surface. Halfway through the opening, I squirm forward and blink away the soil from my eyes. The crumbling soggy earth falls past her and then disappears as she’s clinging to the side of the pit.

Pleading with her stare for me to save her, a gale force beats on my body, as if the realm of Faery is expelling the intruder that is me. “Don’t let go. I’m coming for you.”

“Hurry!” Nails digging into the earthen wall, she grips onto a flimsy root that could break away at any moment. “Riley, help me!”

I swim through the magic, using the soil and chunks of embedded rock to support me as I wiggle my way forward. She’s maybe ten feet down, but as I descend, the earth cinches around my thighs, pinning me until I’m certain the pressure may snap my femurs at any moment.

“Hold on.” I snake my hand to my belt. The buckle is sandwiched between my body and the narrowing gateway. I work the strap back and forth until the pin pulls from the notch. Once free, I dangle the strap toward her. “Make a loop with the buckle and strap. Thread your wrist through the hole. I’ll pull you up.”

Her hair falls about her chest when she glances down, as if considering the consequences of the fall. Is she thinking she’ll survive or die? Is she thinking her people are waiting for her to take her place as their princess, or as their queen?

That hint of neon covers her skin, illuminating the tunnel and highlighting the fear in her eyes. “I can’t fall. I can feel the pull of Faery and the fae existence. Riley, they’re so scared. Something bad is looming. Only, I’m not ready to help them… Don’t let me fall.”

My thoughts push me into a corner. Gone, hiding among her people, she’d be safe—at least for a time—and the vampires would have no one to hunt, to claim. Without the key that is her royal blood as I suspect, I suppose the world of Faery would be safe. Except she’s contradicting my thoughts. I can’t tell if she’s telling the truth or lying. I don’t have all the answers, except to trust my gut. It’s telling me I’m the one who is not ready to let her go, first and foremost. Maybe I’m selfish, maybe I’m a fool, but I don’t have the strength in me to do walk away even at the risk of sacrificing my life.
