Chapter 10
Tricia
My silk dress for the dinner party is royal blue and matches Rileyâs eyes. Itâs luxuriously buttery against my skin, with spaghetti straps and a matching belt that shows off my waist. I feel pretty and nervous all at the same time. No matter how the porch sconce lights up my attire, what if Senator Johnson sees me as a fake, like Iâm trying too hard to win him over? Iâm not deaf to what others think of the manipulative ways of the fae.
âYou look beautiful and youâre nothing like your grandmother.â Riley buttons his jacket, accentuating his athletic waist and bulked-up chest.
He looks amazing in his tan suit. The upper sleeves are taut but not to the point of pulling at the seams. His tie is perfect as it matches my dress. Riley senses my desire for him heat up because the tips of his fangs slip past his lips. âAfter the party, love.â
The door swings wide, and Senator Johnson is looking handsome in his navy pants and white collared shirt, which is splayed open just a bit in a relaxed manner. âCome in, come in⦠If you need to freshen up, the restroom is down that hall, to the left. Weâll be heading to the living room, straight ahead, and I want to introduce you all to my wife, Dalilah.â
I exhale, finding his less-formal manner a breath of fresh air, even though the house glows from the warm bulbs illuminating from that grand chandelier. âThank you, Senator.â
He slips his hand, the one without the sterile gauze, into Rileyâs. I think Iâm going to pass out, Iâm so surprised.
âRiley, Iâd like to talk with you about vampire politics.â
My mate nods, humbly accepting his title, as the senator escorts us into the foyer just as I hear another sedan pull to the curb. âGo ahead, Iâll wait for the others.â
Riley narrows his gaze at me, checking if Iâm okay. My fae guards take up their stations at various locations on the property, so they can beef up the senatorâs security. âGo. Iâll be right along.â
âBring the others into the living room.â
At Senator Johnsonâs instructions, I give him a smile before wandering out onto the veranda. The sky is painted in deep purples of the fading sunset. The perfect time for vampires to make their appearance without their sun suits. The door to the sedan swings open and Ben exits.
My heart somersaults, Iâm so happy. Tears spring to my eyes as I trot down the steps toward him. âBenâs here.â
âA favor of the senator, Iâve just learned.â
Both Riley and I have known Ben since we were kids. Heâs the most loyal and one of the bravest men Iâve ever known. Heâd once hated Riley for turning him into a vampire to save his life. Iâd cured Ben of vampirism, but heâd admired Riley enough to rejoin his coven, which had helped to save Rileyâs life.
Ben tosses his arms around me, hugging me to his chest. âThank you for pulling strings.â
âYou can thank Senator Johnson.
