Chapter Thirteen

Vanessa awakened early, surprised at how deeply she had slept. Her dreams had been vivid.

And all centered around Reed.

Perhaps that is why she fell asleep so easily, knowing her future was now secure. There would be no traveling to London and locating an employment agency. No waiting to be paired with an employer, praying for the right position. She wouldn’t have to travel from family to family, as positions came to a close and new ones were sought out.

Instead, she would become Viscountess Boxling, wed to the most handsome man in London Society. Oh, she realized Reed had far more depth. It wasn’t just his looks she was attracted to. He was honorable, intelligent, and perpetually cheerful. She was eager to learn everything she could about him. Vanessa couldn’t wait to meet the niece and nephew who had captured his heart and also wished to get to know his young half-sisters.

It still amazed her how much her life had changed—and for the better—ever since she had met Louisa at Horace the Horrible’s gravesite. If Louisa had not stopped and asked Vanessa to come home with her, then she never would have been introduced to Reed.

The man she was falling in love with.

She had been telling the truth when she’d told him she felt like Cinderella. Yes, she had always imagined herself dancing at a ball with a handsome prince. Last night in Reed’s arms showed her reality could be far better than any fairy tale. Again, she had to thank Louisa for taking her in when Vanessa was at her lowest point. Perhaps they could name their first daughter after her friend. After all, Reed thought quite highly of Louisa. It was a beautiful name.

She basked in the idea of holding Reed’s babes in her arms. Of him sitting with her, even holding them himself. She had already seen him in the nursery and knew he would enjoy playing with their children. Vanessa prayed she would be able to give him many of them. Filling Boxwell Hall with the sounds of children laughing and playing would be a dream come true as she watched over these children with the best man she had ever known.

Of course, she wouldn’t say anything to the other guests at the house party regarding his plan to make her his wife. At some point, she would have to get the Three Cousins alone and share it with them, though. They would be so happy for her. All three thought highly of Reed and she could see the two of them joining the social circle of her friends.

Her future had never looked brighter.

She rang for a maid and washed as she waited for one to appear. Once she was ready, Vanessa went downstairs. Louisa had told everyone a buffet would be set up each morning in the breakfast room beginning at nine and concluding at ten-thirty. The room had numerous windows and faced the east, allowing a good deal of the morning light to pour through its windows.
