Chapter 20

She slipped out of his hold as easily as he had slipped her into it, causing her to miss the strength and feel of his arms—though not as she missed his brother’s. And when Warin straightened from the bed, she wished when Hector looked upon her thus, that smile was known to his mouth.

Though attracted to this knight who might be more handsome than his brother were one partial to flaxen hair, what Séverine felt was of less depth. And it was not because she had known one longer than the other.

Hector Wulfrith is far from known, an inner voice reminded as his brother continued to look upon her with…

Was it expectation? Not only had he done her a good service, but she picked her gaze over him. And now in his eyes was what seemed admiration that did not fit feelings she had for another.

Fearing her scrutiny was believed flirtation, with less warmth than deserved she said, “I am thankful for your aid.”

His smile wavered. “Is there anything else you require?”

“I—”

“Stay, Brother!” Ondine drew a chair near. “While Esta and I straighten the chamber, keep the lady occupied.”

Her tone and urgency told something was afoot, but Séverine’s mind was too frayed to delve it and her body too desirous of sleep. Thus, when Sir Warin started to lower, with a sharp edge of desperation she said, “I do not need occupying.”

Ondine stilled and the knight looked to his sister.

“Forgive me, but I wish to rest,” Séverine said.

Now he was the one lacking warmth. “Then I shall leave you to it.”

“Though the day is hardly begun, it has been long for the lady,” his sister said with apology. “Once she has slept, I am sure you will enjoy conversing one with the other.”

Sir Warin inclined his head and departed.

Ondine drifted down into the chair and set her head to the side, causing silken black hair to bend into the elegant curve of neck and shoulder. “Having envisioned that in a different light and confident I left no shadow unturned, I am disappointed.”

Though Séverine longed to burrow into the pillows, she shifted to sitting. “How have I disappointed, my lady?”

Ondine glanced at Esta who put order to the chamber disarrayed by efforts to make Séverine presentable. “You ought know Wulfrith is determined not to wed again. Hence, Warin will become his heir—if he remains. If not, our youngest brother, Rémy, who trains at Wulfen will be his heir.”

Feeling as if caught doing something very wrong, Séverine said, “Of what concern mine whether your brother weds again?”

“Of greater concern than I thought, but I am fairly observant, and this is what I observed—Wulfrith makes your mouth go dry, skin warm, heart beat fast.”

“My lady!”

“Regrets, Séverine, but such feeling is wasted on one some cruelly name Pale Rider.”

“Pale rider?”

As if Ondine regretted speaking it, she did not answer but continued, “If you are going to set yourself at one of my brothers—”

“I set myself at neither!”

The lady’s smile was sympathetic. “Best look to Warin.
