Sarga 55: Rama Gives Shatrughna Vishnuâs Arrow
Spoken to thus by Rama, courageous Shatrughna was embarrassed and he said, softly, âBull among men, fortunate one, of course your orders will be carried out. It is difficult to deny your commands. I will fulfil your wishes.â Rama was very pleased. He addressed Lakshmana and Bharata âGather all the materials for the coronation. Today I shall crown this tiger among men, who is difficult to defeat! Bring the family priests and the specialists in the Vedas and the other priests and all the ministers here by my order.â
In accordance with the kingâs wishes, the coronation of the great warrior began. With the family priest walking ahead of him, he entered the royal palace like Indra entering his home. Shatrughnaâs coronation delighted Rama and all the citizens. After the coronation was over, Rama made Shatrughna sit on his lap and said sweetly to him, âDestroyer of enemy cities, this divine arrow never misses its mark and you shall kill Lavana with it, my dear. This arrow was created when Vishnu lay in the waters of the great ocean, when neither the self-born Brahma nor any of the other gods nor demons could see him. He was invisible to all creatures and he created this arrow out of his anger, to kill the two heroic demons, Madhu and Kaitabha. He killed both the demons with this unique arrow and then he went on to create the worlds as he had wanted to do.
âShatrughna, I did not use this arrow earlier to kill Ravana because it would have caused great discomfort to all beings. Three-eyed Shiva gave the best of weapons, a marvellous spear, to Madhu so that he could destroy his enemies. Lavana worships that spear over and over again in his palace and he takes it with him wherever he goes in the worlds. And whenever someone eager to fight approaches him, he lifts the spear and reduces them to ashes. Tiger among men, wait at the eastern gate with your weapon when Lavana is outside the city and without his spear. You will kill that rakshasa if you challenge him to fight before he enters the city. If you do it any other way, he will be invincible. But if you do it this way, you will succeed in destroying him. I have told you all this about the spear because it is difficult to reverse the deeds of blue-throated Shiva.â
