“Seriously?” Tivali exclaimed.

“I just don’t understand,” Soraya said.

“No kidding,” Muezza agreed. “You’d think the Lord of the Nine Realms would have a Hell of a lot more game.”

“He just blurted it out,” Soraya said. “No wooing, no flirting, no passionate kissing, just you’re in Hell, let’s mate.”

“I have no idea why any of you are surprised by this,” Bygul said. “Did you miss the part where the Beast is now in charge? Of course, it’s got no game. It’s been sleeping for fifty years and before that, it was a grouchy hell-monster who everyone tiptoed around because it was so damn horny and cranky.”

“Really?” The other cats exclaimed.

“Oh, yeah. It was a true Beast back then. Desperate for its mate after so many millennia alone. That’s why it finally went to sleep. It was either that or tear the realms apart looking for a mate who hadn’t even been born yet.”

“Did it know that?” Tivali asked. “That she wasn’t here yet?”

“Probably,” Bygul said. “If she’d existed anywhere in the Realms, the Beast would have sensed it and tracked her down in an instant. The only reason Jane made it this far into her lifespan without meeting the Beast is because it was slumbering.”

“Well, it’s not slumbering now,” Muezza said.

“Jane doesn’t look too happy,” Soraya observed.

“Eh, she’s probably just in shock,” Muezza said.

“Considering she just learned the Beast is her mate, I think she’s doing quite well, actually,” Bygul said. “Quite well, indeed.”
