CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT
âYouâve been clamped, Sarge.â Baldwin pointed out when they stood outside Kenneth Loveâs apartment block.
The bright yellow wheel clamp contrasted dramatically with the red of Smithâs Ford Sierra. Smith looked around for the culprit but there was nobody there.
âBastards,â he said. âThis is whatâs wrong with this country at the moment. We canât even do our jobs without some jobsworth making life difficult for us.â
âThey probably didnât know it was a detective sergeantâs car.â
âI donât care. How long were we in there?â he pointed up to the apartment. âFifteen minutes, tops? This is bullshit.â
He spotted the reason for the offensive yellow wheel clamp fifty metres away. A short man in a green tracksuit was watching them closely. Smith approached him. âCould you get that monstrosity off my car right now?â
âYouâre parked in Mrs Dunnâs spot,â the man said. âRules are rules.â
âAnd who might you be? That tracksuit doesnât look like a traffic wardenâs uniform.â
âThis is private land. The body corporate own the building and the parking area â it doesnât come under the jurisdiction of the city council. Iâm the caretaker here.â
Baldwin stepped in. âSir, I assume youâre aware of the new legislation. Clamping on private property is actually against the law.â
Smith took out his ID. âWhich means youâve clamped the wrong car, arsehole.â
The little caretaker looked like he was about to cry. âI donât make the rules. The body corporate are a rule unto themselves.â
âYouâve got two minutes,â Smith told him.
Smith drove off three minutes later leaving a very dejected looking caretaker behind him. He clutched the wheel clamp to his chest like it was a teddy bear.
âIs clamping on private land really against the law?â Smith asked Baldwin.
âIt is. They passed a law a couple of years ago. Why, did you actually think Iâd made it up?â
âIt did cross my mind.â He turned right and drove across the bridge towards the city centre. âIâm starving. I havenât eaten since last night.â
âWeâve got half an hour before the briefing, Sarge. And shouldnât you phone Brownhill? The DI wanted to speak to you, remember?â
âIt can wait. My stomach is growling at me.â
He parked on double yellow lines next to a bakery and left the engine running. âStay here,â he said to Baldwin. âAnd keep an eye out for phantom clampers. Can I get you anything?â
âNo thanks. I had a good breakfast.â
Smith returned with two pies and a sausage roll. The pies were gobbled down before theyâd even reached the road that led back to the station. âThatâs better,â he wiped the crumbs from the side of his mouth. âIâll save the sausage roll for later. What time is it?â
âAlmost three,â Baldwin replied. âWeâre going to be late.â
âDetective work doesnât work to a strict timeline. Brownhill knows that, and youâll learn it in time.â
* * *
The look on Brownhillâs face told a different story. The DI appeared far from impressed. She sat behind her desk with her hands clasped in front of her. âNice of you to join us. Where have you been?â
âAll over,â Smith replied.
