“Roana…” he hesitated then went on, “…why?”

She gaped at him. He had to ask? He had come all this way, followed her clues… her heart swelled a little — he had followed her clues — no, she was still angry with him… and he still didn’t know why?

“Y-you do n-not know?” she stuttered, incredulously.

He spread his hands. “Only what you wrote in your letter.”

“Is that not enough?” Roana demanded, her temper — as fiery as her hair — threatening to spill over.

“You think being the brunt of malicious gossip, to see you hold another in your arms, of being laughed at to my face because I cannot keep my husband satisfied,” she sneered the word, “is not enough? To be ignored in our own home by the man I believed loved me above all others, or the searing humiliation when my attempt to seduce him, is met by a blank stare, is not enough?

“What more do you want, Gideon? I tried everything to get you to talk to me. To tell me what I had done to precipitate such indifference. Have you any idea how many nights I cried myself to sleep or walked the halls because slumber eluded me? No, of course you haven’t. You were not there.

“Even when we were together you were distant, preoccupied. I accept my decision to come here, to run away was inconsiderate, drastic even. Believe me, I did not take it lightly. It was my last resort.”

She sucked in a breath and flipped her hand. “You read my letters. You solved my puzzles. Something motivated you to follow me, to find me, yet you could not be bothered to help me up after causing me to fall. How can you possibly say you do not know what provoked me to act thus?”
